Create Mental Images

Picture in your mind what you are reading

Self-Question

Ask yourself questions as you read

Summarize

List the main things that happen in the story to remember what you read.

Read Ahead

If you are having trouble understanding sosmething, don’t give up.  Keep reading and it may become clearer.

Reread to Clarify

Try rereading the part again if you don’t understand it the first time

Use Context Clues

If a word is unfamiliar, pay attention to the words and sentences around it for context clues to it’s meaning.

Use Text Structure/Format

Find clues to meaning by looking at how the author organized information.

Adjust Reading Rate

Read selection slower if it contains lots of facts and details.
